On Tuesday night, broadcaster Tucker Carlson admitted on national television that he and a friend assaulted a person who "bothered" him in a Washington D.C. public restroom. He described grabbing and hitting the man against a stall, while drawing laughter from his fellow hosts. </p> Comments that condone violence -- and imply violence against gays and lesbians -- are unacceptable. Tell Tucker Carlson he must apologize publicly for his comments»
The comment occurred during a discussion on MSNBC Live with Dan Abrams about Senator Craig's arrest for "lewd conduct" and eventual guilty plea. MSNBC has replayed some of the segment, but cropped out Carlson's comments that he "…went back with someone I knew and grabbed the guy by the -- you know, and grabbed him, and ... [h]it him against the stall with his head." That statement was coupled with laughter from Carlson's fellow hosts Dan Abrams and Joe Scarborough, suggested to viewers that physical violence is an appropriate response to an unwelcome proposal. This is dangerous and wrong.
MSNBC has yet to acknowledge Carlson's comments. By failing to address this issue, MSNBC is sending a message to their viewers this type of violence is appropriate. Join me in telling MSNBC that its viewers and the American people deserve an explanation» Thank you for speaking out for our nation's health! Natasha

| my famous friend, LeLo |
[Aug. 31st, 2007|09:15 am] |
A couple of days ago, I posted a link to LeLo's blog about Ira Glass doing an OPB fundraiser at the New Hope Community Church, a venue very politically active against gay rights.
LeLo was pissed for obvious reasons. I was pissed because I, too, wanted to see Ira speak. I've seen him twice before in Portland at other venues, but I didn't want any part of my twenty-fucking-eight dollar ticket to go to the New Hope Community Church. So, when I read LeLo's post, I helped spread the word and e-mailed Ira's booking agent and OPB at 1:30 in the morning on Wednesday.
The Steven Barclay Agency, located in Petaluma, CA, e-mailed me back at seven o'clock in the morning. By 10am, everyone was blogging about LeLo's post. By the end of the day, Ira, OPB, and LeLo were everywhere, including The Portland Mercury, KGW News, Blue Oregon, OR Blogs, and, this morning, in print, in The Oregonian.
And, most importantly: OPB found a different venue for Ira Glass' lecture. Hurray!
I'm sharing this story with you because a) I think LeAnn's a rock star and b) it just goes to show that a little activism can sometimes go a long way. We all need to speak are minds louder and more often. I want to congratulate LeAnn on this success and OPB for doing the right thing in the end. What great news for me to start the day to! |

| Ira Glass, OPB, where?!?!? WTF! |
[Aug. 29th, 2007|01:36 am] |
Long story short: Ira Glass is scheduled to do a benefit for OPB in a church that's very right wing conservative...and very anti-LGBT. Fuck that!
The wonderful LeLo in NoPo has the full scoop here.
Ira Glass' booking agent is Steven Barclay. I sent him an e-mail. I think you should, too. Or call This American Life’s home at Chicago Public Broadcasting: 312-948-4600. Or on TAL's MySpace. Oregon Public Radio should not be paying a venue to host any event that would exclude any of their listeners. As an OPB volunteer and member, I'm pissed.
P.S. I've got a big-ass crush on Ira Glass. But that has nothing to do with this rant, I swear.
UPDATE: I just got this email response today:
Ira Glass has asked OPB to find an alternate space for his lecture event and they are working on this today. Thank you for your email
